This marvelous Muttley Cake was made by BellaBoo Cakes Surrey for a 70th birthday. This version of Muttley is from the cartoon – Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines. You can tell because Muttley has traded in his red dog collar for a red aviator scarf, aviator hat and a set of goggles. I adore the fact that Muttley has his hand to his mouth as if he is making his classic snickering laugh.
In the cartoon Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, Dick Dastardly and Muttley are flying aces in World War I-styled airplanes. They are members of the Vulture Squadron, whose mission is to stop a messenger pigeon named Yankee Doodle Pigeon from delivering top-secret messages to an opposing army.
One of the running gags in the cartoon is that Muttley will only help Dick Dastardly if Dick awards Muttley aviator medals for his help. When Muttley screwed up, Dick will often take those same medals away. That’s why on the cake, the name and age are on an aviator ribbon. This is one of my favorite details on the cake.
What’s my favorite detail on the cake? Look at the bottom tier. It has red and purple stripes and a red bill with purple trim. It’s Dick Dastardly’s hat. That is such a brilliant idea.
