He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Half-Brother

Grawp Cake

Kaykes made this terrific cake of Grawp, Hagrid’s Half-Brother.

Kay made this for the Harry Potter Themed cake collaboration – Birthday Mischief Managed.  Birthday Mischief Managed is a worldwide collaboration of food artists to celebrate J.K. Rowling’s 50th Birthday. The collaboration went live on July 31st, the date of J.K. Rowling’s and Harry Potter’s birthdays.

Hagrid is a giant of a man with a heart of gold.  He finds out part way through the Harry Potter novels that the reason he is so big is that his mother was a giant.  Hagrid tries to persuade the giants to join in the battle against Lord Voldemort.  While with the giants, he meets Grawp.  Grawp is picked on by the giants because of his small stature; he was only 16 feet tall.  Hagrid discovers that Grawp is actually his half brother and ends up taking Grawp back to Hogwarts with him.

Kay’s sculpting of Grawp is wonderful.  With his greyish skin, he doesn’t look human.  The detail on his face and hair is wonderful.  He looks like he is wearing an animal skin for clothes.  I also really like how Grawp looks like he is in the woods because he lived in the Forbidden Forest while staying at Hogwarts.

Grawp was made of vanilla cake and icing, fully airbrushed and hand painted.

Grawp does understand birthday presents so he brought J.K. Rowling’s and Harry Potter a stick for their birthdays.
