This Marvelous cake was created for the Steam Cakes – Steampunk Collaboration. To celebrate the Steampunk International Day, Cake Artists from around the world gathered to create their own edible Steampunk masterpieces.
I also want to spotlight Joane Chopard and share my interview.
Tell me about yourself. How long have you been decorating cakes? How did you learn to decorate? Do you decorate professionally? Have you taught any cake decorating classes? Have you competed in any cake competitions?
Hello, my name is Joane, alias “Mademoiselle fait des gateaux”, I am 39 years old, and I live in Switzerland.
I am the mother of two wonderful girls aged 8 and 11. I came across cake design a bit by accident a few years ago when I wanted to make a birthday cake for my daughter. The first cakes were really weird, but I liked making them, and I persevered. I discovered an ease in
modeling, and I liked that. For a while, I made cakes for fun, for the birthdays of my children or friends. Then the magic of social media made my cakes and decorative pieces known and I started selling them. I have offered training with big names in cake design, I have evolved and I have acquired many techniques. And then I had a few opportunities, I started giving modeling training.
I am a nurse by profession, but now 3 years ago, I left my psychiatric nurse position to devote myself to cake design and especially to workshops.
I have traveled to Switzerland, France, Belgium and Morocco to teach my way of modeling sugar dolls.
I am a “touch to everything”, I like challenges and I am not afraid to leave my comfort zone to offer original cakes and unique pieces.
I also participated in several contests (cake international birmingham 2016, 2017 and 2019 where I won several gold medals and a macaron, and I won the “best in show” at Expogato in Marseille in 2016.
Bonjour, je m’appelle Joane, alias « Mademoiselle fait des gâteaux », j’ai 39ans, et je vis en suisse.
Je suis maman de deux merveilleuses filles de 8ans et 11ans. Je suis tombé dans le cake design un peu par hasard,
il y a quelques années, lorsque j’ai souhaité faire un gâteau d’anniversaire à ma fille. Les premiers gâteaux étaient
vraiment bizarres, mais j’ai aimé les faire, et j’ai persévéré. Je me suis découvert une facilité à modeler, et j’ai aimé ça. Pendant un temps, j’ai fait des gâteaux pour le plaisir, pour les anniversaires de mes enfants ou des amis.
Puis la magie des réseaux sociaux a fait connaître mes gâteaux et mes pièces décoratives et j’ai commencé à les
vendre. Je me suis offert des formations auprès de grands noms du cake design, j’ai évolué et j’ai acquis de
nombreuses techniques. Et puis j’ai eu quelques opportunités, j’ai commencé à donner des formations de modelage.
Je suis infirmière de profession, mais voilà maintenant 3ans, j’ai quitté mon poste d’infirmière en psychiatrie pour me consacrer au cake design et surtout aux ateliers.
J’ai voyagé en suisse, en France, en Belgique et au Maroc pour enseigner ma façon de modeler des poupées en sucre.
Je suis une « touche à tout », j’aime les défis et je n’ai pas peur de sortir de ma zone de confort pour proposer des gâteaux originaux et des pièces uniques.
J’ai également participé à plusieurs concours (cake international Birmingham 2016, 2017 et 2019 où j’ai remporté plusieurs médailles d’or et un macaron, et j’ai remporté le « best in show » à Expogato à Marseille en 2016.

Tell me about your cake. What was the inspiration for your cake? How did you create it?
This is the first year that I have participated in this steampunk collaboration. I have known and followed her from the start, it is an honor for me to have been able to be part of it. The steampunk universe is a universe that I adore, I am inspired by it very often for my pieces (and my own tattoos!). I chose to make a big bust, a lady with a retro and very sexy twist. It is a completely unique piece, even if I was inspired by details on the left and on the right. I went out of my comfort zone to create this big bust; it was a challenge because I am not used to modeling so big! I really loved making it !!
C’est la première année que je participe à cette collaboration steampunk. Je la connais et la suis depuis le début, c’est un honneur pour moi d’avoir pu en faire partie. L’univers steampunk est un univers que j’adore, je m’en inspire d’ailleurs très souvent pour mes pièces (et mes propres tatouages !). J’ai choisi de réaliser un grand buste, une demoiselle un brin rétro et très sexy. C’est une pièce complètement unique, même si je me suis inspirée de détails à gauche et à droite. Je suis sortie de ma zone de confort pour créer ce grand buste, c’était un défi car je n’ai pas l’habitude de modeler si grand ! J’ai vraiment adoré la réaliser!!
Stories about your cakes. Do you remember the first cake you decorated? When and why did you decide that you wanted to create cakes as a business / hobby?
My first cake was for my daughter Lana’s 2 years. I dreamed of making a pink and smooth double-decker cake. I did not know the sugar paste, I bought a pink icing in the store, I heated it then poured on my raw cake … the result was horrible!! Already, I did not have enough icing, then nothing was covered, it was bumps, crumbs, the color was pale … in short, I experienced hell!! So, I promised myself that the following year, my daughter would have a real nice cake, I had a year to learn to do better! The following year, I covered my cake with sugar paste! The result was not perfect, but it was at least closer to my expectations! And then from year to year, my daughters have challenged me, which I have tried to take up, I have been looking for how to do it, I have learned, I have trained myself …
Mon premier gâteau était pour les 2ans de ma fille Lana. Je rêvais de réaliser un gâteau à deux étages rose et bien lisse. Je ne connaissais pas la pâte à sucre, j’ai acheté un glaçage rose dans le commerce, je l’ai chauffé puis versé sur mon gâteau brut… le résultat était horrible !! Déjà, je n’avais pas assez de glaçage, ensuite rien n’était couvert, cela faisait des bosses, des miettes, l couleur était pâle… bref j’ai vécu l’enfer !! Je me suis donc promis que l’année suivante, ma fille aurait un vrai beau gâteau, j’avais un an pour apprendre à faire mieux ! L’année suivante, j’ai couvert mon gâteau avec de la pâte à sucre ! Le résultat n’était pas parfait mais il était au moins plus proche de mes attentes ! Et puis d’années en années, mes filles m’ont lancé des défis, que j’ai taché de relever,
j’ai cherché comment faire, j’ai appris, je me suis formé…
What is your favorite fandom? Who is your favorite Harry Potter character? If you went to Hogwarts, which house would you want to be sorted into? Which house would you actual be sorted into? If you were a teacher at Hogwarts, what class would you want to teach? What would your Patronus be?
In my family, we are unconditional fans of Harry Potter! We read the books, saw all the movies several times, we went to London to visit the Warner Bross Studios. My big daughter celebrated her 11th birthday under the theme of Harry Potter, I have for the occasion to create several pieces on this theme! (a Harry Potter Pop version carved cake, a Mandrake, a monstrous book of monsters).
If I could integrate a house, I would obviously go to Griffondor!
If I were a teacher, I would like to teach potions, or maybe knowledge of fantastic animals, or spells … this question is too difficult!
As for my patronus, he would be a golden eagle!
Dans ma famille, nous sommes des fans inconditionnels d’Harry Potter ! Nous avons lu les livres, vu tous les films plusieurs fois, nous sommes allés à Londres pour visite les Warner Bross Studios. Ma grande fille a d’ailleurs fêté ses 11ans sous le thème d’Harry Potter, j’ai pour l’occasion créer plusieurs pièces sur ce thème ! (un gâteau sculpté Harry Potter version Pop, une Mandragore, un monstrueux livre des monstres).
Si je pouvais intégrer une maison, j’irais évidement à Griffondor!
Si j’étais un professeur, j’aimerais enseigner les potions, ou peut-être les connaissances des animaux fantastiques, ou encore les sortilèges… cette question est trop difficile !

Who is your favorite Star Wars character? Which Star Wars movie is your favorite? Do you have a favorite Star Wars TV show or book? If you were living in the Star Wars universe – what would you want to be Jedi, Sith, Rebel, Imperial, Resistance, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter…?
I saw the first 6 Star Wars, then I got a little lost for the aftermath. I loved the movies, but I admit that it’s not really my preference anymore. But if I had to choose, then I would be a Jedi!!
J’ai vu les 6 premiers Stars Wars, puis je me suis un peu perdue pour les suites. J’ai adoré les films mais j’avoue que ce n’est plus vraiment ma préférence aujourd’hui. Mais si je devais choisir, alors je serais un Jedi !!
Do you have a favorite Disney movie? Do you have a favorite Disney character? What is your favorite thing to watch on Disney+? Have you been to any of the Disney parks? Do you have a favorite ride? Do you have a favorite story about a trip or experience at one of the Disney parks?
This question is also too difficult! I love Disney, I can’t choose a favorite because everyone carries a message, a story that touches us. The characters are all endearing, whether they act animals, princesses, or brigands!
I have visited Disneyland Paris several times, I love to walk in this magic-filled park!
Cette question est également trop difficile ! J’adore Disney, je ne peux pas choisir un préféré car chacun porte un message, une histoire qui nous touche. Les personnages sont tous attachant, qu’ils agissent des animaux, des princesses ou des brigands !
J’ai visité plusieurs fois Disneyland Paris, j’adore me balader dans ce parc rempli de magie !
Do you have a favorite superhero? What is your favorite superhero movie? If you read comics, what is your favorite comic or run on a comic? If you could be any superhero, who would you want to be? If you could have one super power, what would it be?
I really like the universe of the Marvels, I loved the movies of superman, Spiderman, and Batman these are my favorites. My daughter has her first name Lana because we watched superman and there is the character of Lana Lane (Smallville). I also loved the X-Men, Deadpool and venom.
If I could be a superhero, I would choose a mix of lots of different powers! But if I had to have only one, then I wish I could move the objects!
When I was little, I loved the stories of witches, magic and supernatural, I kept it growing but now I’m a fan of futuristic stories, fantasy, science fiction … so my choice would rather be towards the future !!
