Flintstones Cake Toppers

These fabulous Flintstones Cake Toppers were made by Luciana Aguos. They include Fred and Wilma Flintstone, Wilma’s mom – Pearl Slaghoople, Barney and Betty Rubble, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm all grown up and with kids of their own, Dino and Hoppy. The detail on each character is amazing. I can’t believe Luciana included Pearl and Hoppy, they aren’t usually included.

Each figure has a separate stand, so there are so many options for how they can be posed. Luciana made a lovely backdrop for the cake topper which looks like the Flintstone’s house and garage. It has stone fences on the sides and palm trees in the yard. Behind the house are mountains and a pterodactyl flies overhead.

Fred Flintstone Cake Topper

Fred Flintstone

Fred is wearing his usual orange and black sabretooth skin outfit with a blue tie. He has black hair and eyes and a large nose and mouth. The sculpting on Fred is perfect!

Wilma and Her Mother Cake Toppers

Wilma and Her Mother

Wilma Flintstone and her mother, Pearl Slaghoople. The episodes with Pearl are always so much fun because she makes a wonderful adversary for Fred. Behind Wilma and Pearl are grown up version of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm. Both are holding babies. I like how the baby Pebbles is holding has red hair like Pebbles, while the baby Bamm-Bamm is holding has white hair like Bamm-Bamm.

Behind Barney and Betty are Hoppy and Dino. When I was a kid, I thought Hoppy was so cute! I loved how Bamm-Bamm could ride in his pocket.

Dino The Dinosaur Cake

Dino The Dinosaur Cake

Dino The Dinosaur Cake

This cute Dino The Dinosaur Cake was made by Hanimis. It is a 2-D carved cake of Dino’s head. Dino has a blue collar with a gold dinosaur license. Dino is smiling and looking to one side. He has three little hairs sticking up from the top of his head. The cake board is a yellowish gold and has three hearts on it.

I’ve always liked Dino. Did you know that the version everyone knows and loves is actually the third version of Dino?

The very first appearance of the Flintstones was in a little Golden Book. It was developed so early on that it had Fred and Wilma’s son – Fred Jr in it. It is a cute story about Fred Jr. bringing home a little dinosaur, named Harvey, that he wants to keep as a pet. The little dinosaur grows and grows until he is gigantic and eats a ton. Unhappily, Fred and Wilma tell Fred Jr. that he can no longer keep Harvey as his pet. Later, Fred is in a boating accident and Harvey saves Fred’s life. The book ends with them keeping Harvey as their pet. Harvey is large green dinosaur with spots, but the face is very similar to Dino’s. The idea of the Flintstones having a pet dinosaur and a lot of Dino’s looks originated with this book.

The Flintstone’s cartoon wasn’t aired in the order that the cartoon were produced. The first animated appearance of Dino was in the episode – The Snorkasaurus Hunter. The Snorkasaurus looks a lot like Dino, but he walks standing up on his back legs and talks. He reminds me of Top Cat because both were patterned after Phil Silvers. At the end of the cartoon, the Snorkasaurus is serving as the family butler.

They finally settled on making Dino the family’s pet dog and I think that worked best. I really couldn’t see Dino the wisecracking butler lasting. While Harvey was cute, I think being gigantic would have made it harder to fit him into stories easily.

Happy Father’s Day!

I thought Father’s Day was the perfect time to spotlight two of my favorite cartoon dads. This wonderful Fred Flintstone & Barney Rubble Cake was made by Moxy.

The cake itself is a single tier and has an absolutely amazing hand painting of  The Flintstone’s house. The house is made from stones and the roof is one gigantic flat piece of stone. There is a wooden front door, a stone fence around the front of the house with a wooden door. There is also a mailbox that looks like it is made from a hollowed out log.

The top of the cake has terrific figures of Fred and Barney. Fred has his arm around Barney and both are wishing two different people a Happy 54th Birthday. The Fred and Barney Cake Toppers are great. They look like the hopped right out of a television set.

So why are Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble two of my favorite cartoon dads?

When I was kid, Popeye was Popeye. He wooed Olive Oyl, ate spinach, and fought with Bluto/Brutus. Bugs Bunny ate carrots and outwitted Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam.

Fred and Barney were different. They began as a cartoon version of the Honeymooners. But, that all changed. Wilma announced she was pregnant and before you knew it, Fred and Wilma were parents. Barney and Betty didn’t (couldn’t?) have kids, so they ended up adopting Bamm-Bamm. Their stories changed and began focusing on these characters as parents and families. Character growth like this rarely happened in regular TV shows and was unheard of in cartoons. That made the Flintstones unique. As a kid, I didn’t understand any of that. What I did realize was that because these characters grew and changed, they were more fully developed and I cared about them more.

Wishing you a Yabba Dabba Doo Father’s Day!

These wonderful The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones Cookies were made by The Country Cookie. Madison did an amazing job with these cookies. They are sweeter than a Spacely Sprocket and make we want to shout Yabba Dabba Doo!

Both The Flintstones and The Jetsons are among my favorite cartoons. I watched them a ton when I was little and still love them to this day. I have every episode of both series on DVD and some seasons on digital.

The very first thing I thought of when I saw these cookies was Hanna-Barbera’s animated film The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones. It is a cute movie where both families meet. There are also fun segments with the Jetsons stranded in Bedrock while the Flintstones are stuck in the future.

In addition to the characters being perfect, look at the backgrounds around Wilma and Rosey. The Flintstone cookies have stone background with little imperfections in them. Since the Jetsons live in a house in the sky and drive flying cars, their cookies have sky blue backgrounds.
