I Don’t Want To Be Afraid Of Being Alive

Brittani-D-Maggie-Not-Afraid-02

This Walking Dead Cookie was made by Layde Cakes.  Brittani made this cookie that features Maggie Greene and Glenn Rhee for The Baking Dead, a collaboration of over 50 cake and sugar artists celebrating the hit AMC series The Walking Dead.  You can find The Baking Dead on the web, Facebook, and Twitter.

The sugar artists that make up The Baking Dead come from all over the globe.  Each artist chose a character or scene from the show to recreate in sugar or cake form. They were asked to incorporate the emotion and relationships that are conveyed in the show and use butter, sugar, candy and cake to make you “feel” through their piece, in much the same way that the show conveys such strong emotions.

Baking Dead is also dedicated to helping to spread the word about Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness. Since the beginning of the show, the issue of domestic violence has reared it’s ugly head and continues to be an issue faced throughout the series. The Baking Dead is dedicate to all the survivors of domestic violence and to wants to link with as many domestic violence prevention and awareness organizations as possible, including the National Center on Domestic & Sexual Violence.  Many in the group have been touched by or are survivors of domestic violence in one form or another and felt that this would be a great opportunity to get the word out.

Maggie Greene and Glenn Rhee

Brittani titled this cookie I don’t want to be afraid.  The title comes from a something Maggie said in the episode “30 Days Without an Accident”.  Here is the dialog from IMDB:

Maggie Greene: I'm not pregnant.
Glenn Rhee: You know?
Maggie Greene: I know.
Glenn Rhee: [sighs in relief] Oh, thank God.
Maggie Greene: Yeah.
Glenn Rhee: Oh, my God.
Maggie Greene: I didn't want to, but we could have. We can have lives here.
Glenn Rhee: How can you say that after today? After Lori?
Maggie Greene: Because I don't want to be afraid of being alive.
Glenn Rhee: Being afraid is what's kept us alive.
Maggie Greene: No. It's how we kept breathing.

Brittani wrote the following about her awesome cookie:

“My subject for The Baking Dead was Maggie Greene. When thinking of how I wanted to portray her in sugar, I knew I wanted to include Glenn. Throughout the show, they have become such huge parts of each other and I felt as though it was important to highlight their romance that they found in the midst of such chaos.

My piece is a 6"x10" sugar cookie iced in royal icing and hand painted using a combination of gel and liquid food coloring.

I was very excited to have been given the privilege to be a part of something so close to me. I love the show and love the characters and am glad I got to pay some tribute to them by doing something I love.”
