Scott Cummins, The Pumpkin Gutter, is one of my favorite pumpkin artists. This Davy Jones Pumpkin Carving is a classic example of why I love his pumpkins. The detail on his pumpkins are amazing and his use of light is exceptional. He is one of the few carvers whose pumpkins look just as stunning when they’re lit as when they’re not lit.
I love Davy Jones’ beard made of tentacles. The thing which makes it so amazing is that there are multiple layers of tentacles. There are tentacles on top of tentacles. How one carves a pumpkin like that is beyond me.
There are even little octopus suckers on his head.
The design of Davy Jones is wonderful. His upper lip and moustache are a tentacle that hangs all the way down his face. It meets up with the tentacle which makes up his lower lip and beard. His eye brows joins with the upper lip / moustache tentacle. He pretty much doesn’t have any nose. I really like how his eyes are inset. If they weren’t inset, they wouldn’t be as noticeable.
Here are three pictures of this amazing pumpkin carving in progress.
The details on the eyes are amazing!
I love this photo because it shows how fine Scott’s carving tools are.
