Marvelous Angolian Music of Africa Cake

This Marvelous Angolian Music of Africa Cake was made by Soraia Amorim by  Soraia Amorim Sugar Artist from Figueira da Foz, Portugal.   

This Marvelous Angolian Music of Africa Cake was made for the Music Around The World – Cake Notes Collaboration which is a cake collaboration that gathered forty-one cake and sugar artists from all over the world to celebrate the International Day of Music in the sweetest way. The collaboration covers cultural aspects of music made around the world, representing music genres and instruments from all over the world.

Here is Soraia’s bio:

My name is Soraia Amorim and I live and work in Figueira da Foz, Portugal.My passion for cake design emerged very early; when I started to help my mom baking and cake decorating. It was from her that I learned and took the first steps in this profession. In 2009 I took my first training in a course of pastry / bakery in CTPSA in Coimbra. Since then I have had the opportunity to do several workshops with great professionals, national and international.In 2008 I joined the Portuguese team that has competed in two international fairs: the SIGEP in Rimini, Italy and the “European Championship Bread” in Nantes, France. also participated in some competitions in which I raised prizes: 1st prize in the “Barrigas de Amor”” (Oeiras) in 2011; 1st place in the contest with the theme “Zoo” at the Fair of Chocolate (Óbidos) and gold medal at Cake International Birmingham, both in 2014.

O meu nome é Soraia Amorim e vivo e trabalho na Figueira da Foz, em Portugal. A minha paixão pelo cake design surgiu muito cedo; quando comecei a ajudar a minha mãe na confecção e decoração de bolos. Foi com ela que aprendi e dei os primeiros passos nesta profissão. Em 2009 tirei a minha primeira formação na área, um curso de pastelaria/panificação no CTPSA, em Coimbra. Desde então tive a oportunidade de fazer vários workshops com grandes profissionais, nacionais e internacionais.Em 2008 integrei a equipa portuguesa que foi a concurso a duas feiras internacionais: a SIGEP, em Rimini, Itália e o “Campeonato Europeu do Pão”, em Nantes, França. Participei também em alguns concursos nos quais arrecadei prémios: 1º prémio no concurso “Barrigas de Amor” (Oeiras) em 2011; 1º lugar no concurso com tema “Jardim Zológico” na Feira de Chocolate (Óbidos) e medalha de ouro no Cake International de Biringham, ambos em 2014. 

Here is Soraia’s description of her Fabulous cake:

I chose the theme African music because, despite being Portuguese, my parents and grandparents are Angolans and I grew up listening to many stories of this land. I decided to represent traditional instruments of this continent, I see and I touch since I was small and always fascinated me. Two of them are drums, one of them known as djembe, and the other is kisanji, an instrument constructed with a gourd, a wooden board and plates of various sizes. When we talk about African music I immediate remember of powerful voices associated to this continent and nothing better to represent it than the painting of a singer with the traditional turban with patterns and strong colors. It was the first time I painted a human face and I used cocoa butter to paint. 

Eu escolhi como tema musica africana porque, apesar de ser portuguesa, os meus pais e avós são angolanos e cresci a ouvir muitas histórias desta terra. Decidi então representar instrumentos tradicionais deste continente, que vejo e mexo desde pequena e sempre me fascinaram. Dois deles são tambores , um deles conhecido como djembe, e o outro é o kisanji, um instrumento construído com uma cabaça, uma placa de madeira e lamelas de vários tamanhos. Quando falamos de musica africana lembro-me de imediato das vozes graves e poderosas que a este continente estão associadas e nada melhor para representar isso do que a pintura de uma cantora com o tradicional turbante de padrões e cores fortes. Foi a primeira vez que pintei um rosto humano e que utilizei manteiga de cacau para pintar.
