Couture Cakers International Sugar Art Collaboration is hosted by Heba M Elalfy of Sweet Dreams by Heba. This is the fourth annual celebration of couture using all types of sugar medium as created by an international team of Sugar Artists. The theme this year is Islamic / Hijabi Bridal Dresses.

For the next few days I will be interviewing sugar artists who are participating in the collaboration.

Here is my interview with Zuzana Kmecova.

Tell me about yourself. How long have you been decorating? How did you learn to decorate? Do you decorate professionally? Have you taught any cake decorating classes? Have you competed in any competitions?

Hi ☺ my name is Zuzana – „cake nick“ is Blacksun. This „nickname“ I have chosen within my motorcycle friends when I have started to ride on my own motorcycle (yamaha drag star 650) ☺ But since I have my little son (6years old) I am not so often with my biker friends and on the road on my motorcycle ☺ My first cake was for my husband for his 40 birthday ☺ It was a disaster – I didn´t know nothing about how to bake a cake (didn´t know how to cooperate with eggs even ☺) –the cake is not possible to be presented anywhere ☺ But my husband was happy ☺ Second cake was for my friend – biker too – with simple honda sign. Third cake was for my son on his 1st birthday ☺ And then I received my first „order“ – it was another disaster – I didn´t know that when you try to add red/black colour to home-made fondant it is not so good idea ☺ And since that time I tried to learn some new things from internet (youtube) and magazines (in Slovakia we have magazine „Torty od mamy“ full of receipes and tutorials). Cake decorating and revealing new techniques is the same that alchemy (since I was a little girl I wanted to be an alchemist ☺ – love witches, and fantasy and fairy tales till now ☺ )..
But in my life I am working as a psychologist – mainly with children (and with their parents of course ☺ ).. Cake decorating is my hobby – no one who knows me from my student times never would believe I will be decorating cakes ☺ Because I was always a little bit crazy – love motorcycles, love hard rock/metal music, tattoos … etc. – but now, when I am cake decorating also love to make flowers (really love to make flowers) ☺ But I admire to make some strange cakes – black coloured, steampunk, hard rock/metal cakes etc. Every weird thing I love so much ☺ And I didn´t do copies – love to make originals on my own way ☺
I am self – educated, but I won one lesson of modelling figure tutorial. And have some flowers lessons. I have competed on some competitions here at our country – my first competition (2018) was an awesome experience for me – I have won 1st place in my category (Film category – I had painted portraits of John Snow and Daenerys, I had on the competition piece also hand modelled Wolf, dragon and sword and a crown.. some parts typical for Game of thrones). Then me and my friends (Bezana, Torty Zeiko) went to an international competition in Warszaw, Poland (2019) – I have won Silver (birthday cake with Freddie Mercury portraits in pop-art style and with Freddies bust) and Bronze price (modelled forest creatures) ☺ And Then I was in competition here in Slovakia again (2019) – judges gave me Silver medal (Second place.. for my Old witch / Snowwhite – Darkness vs Lightness), but I won audition price for „the best in show“ (from people, visitors).

Tell me about your design.

I am trying to be as original as it is possible ☺ But I found inspirations on pinterest, in art, in nature, in the world around us .. choosing some details that are interesting for me ☺ trying to make a cake personalized to who is celebrating (asking clients of best colours, hobbies, stories about them . trying to know their life and everything that make them happy).. I found inspiration also international from cake artists -. Trying to combine some details that I am able to create ☺

If one of the famous cake decorators offered to make you your dream cake, what would you ask for?

Hmm.. If I could choose some world famous cake artist I would love to have cake from Nasa Mala Zavrzlama / or Moli cakes / or Amaury Guichon / or Elena Gnut ☺ Every year different decorator and different theme – I love Harry Potter ! this is my dream to get the cake on the theme.. Love hard rock/metal – Iron maiden, rammstein for example … or Game of thrones.. I am also book – lover – love to read fantasy books .. love fairy – tales for adults ☺ Harry Potter, Lord of the rings , Twilight (books rather then films)… Anything about vampires or witches.. or the witcher (love the books and tv series) and also Love MASH and Big bang theory and Frasier.. ☺ I love when goodness wins against the badassess (darkness) – I just love happy-ends ☺

Who is your favorite Harry Potter character? If you went to Hogwarts, which house would you want to be sorted into? Which house would you actual be sorted into? If you were a teacher at Hogwarts, what class would you want to teach? What would your Patronus be?

I LOVE HARRY POTTER ☺ (and Lord of the rings, and Game of thrones especially dragons, and the Witcher.. ) ☺ My favourite HP character was professor Snape – I believed he is good always ☺ I would love to be a part of Gryffindor house in Hogwarts. I would love to teach classes like „vingardium leviosa“ and some „defence spells“ ☺. My patronus will be some dragon (love dragons) ☺

Do you have a favorite superhero? What is your favorite superhero movie? If you read comics, what is your favorite comic or run on a comic? If you could be any superhero, who would you want to be? If you could have one super power, what would it be?

Superhero ? Maybe Harley Quinn? ☺ Is she superhero? Maybe not ☺ I don´t like superheroes – superheroes are super – real people in my life ☺ Wait a moment.. aaa I have one superheroe that I like for years – Buffy the vampire slayer ☺ Super power hmm.. I would like to have ..maybe some kind of healing powers and immortality ☺ (and sense of humor) ☺

Do you have a favorite cartoon series or character? What was your favorite cartoon to watch when you were little?

From Cartoons I love Tom and Jerry (the older,classic episodes) ☺ I prefer Tom ☺ but I like also Jerry ☺ Nobody can wins – they both have to cooperate ☺
