Downton Abbey Cake inspired by Lady Mary Riding A Black horse

Here is Pauline’s description of her Fabulous cake:

My piece was inspired by a photograph of Lady Mary dressed in a black riding habit, sitting side-saddleon a dark bay horse with her skirt draped elegantly over her legs and onto the side of the horse in season 1. I wanted to recreate the elegant and statuesque figure of the lady on her magnificent steed. I also wanted to portray her strength of character and horsemanship through her control of a large and muscular horse. Extensive research was done on the anatomy of the horse, side saddle riding and equestrian equipment to serve this purpose. The horse with it rider stands at around 15 inches height and is by far my largest and tallest figurine to date. The photography background is a painting of Highclere Castle by Jenny Kennedy. The horse’s head and body is carved out of styrofoam. The styrofoam body is supported by two wooden skewers in front and two 9 gauge aluminum wires bent to the shape of the hind legs at the back . This internal structure is then covered with a 50-50 modeling chocolate and gumpaste mix. The muscular details on the horse’s chest and legs are marked and indented by hand and with a Dresden tool. The horse’s braided mane is achieved by braiding thin strands of gumpaste which I twisted into tiny rosettes and pasted onto a thicker strand of gumpaste behind the horse’s neck. I airbrushed the horse with layers of brown to achieve the deep colour and painted its mane and tail with black. The horse’s snaffle and curb bits are made of florist wires twisted into shape, covered in gumpaste and hand painted with silver dust mixed with alcohol. The horse’s reins are thin strips of gumpaste supported by 26 gauge florist wires underneath to prevent breakage. The lady’s body is modeled entirely out of gumpaste. Except for her skirt which is thinly rolled gumpaste draped over her legs and pleated onto the side of the horse, her attire is made out of modeling chocolate / gumpaste mix.
