Every October, Between the Pages Blog switches from featuring amazing pop culture cakes and cookie to featuring the coolest geeky pumpkin carvings. One of my favorite themes for these carvings are characters who I’d associate with Halloween. This Count Duckula Pumpkin Carving created by Matt Hayday, aka The Pumpkin King is perfect for Halloween.
The design of this pumpkin carving is based on the logo for the Count Duckula cartoon. The Count is standing with his arms out and his palms facing the viewer. His eyes are crossed. He is wearing a tux and a bow tie. The tuxedo’s collar is so large and pointy that it almost look like bat wings.
Here is this fun pumpkin lit up.
Matt’s from the United Kingdom, which makes sense because Count Duckula was a British cartoon. The Count began as a villain in the beloved and extremely popular cartoon Danger Mouse.
In the United States, Nickelodeon began airing Danger Mouse. It was so popular that Nickelodeon wanted to spin-off a second cartoon from Danger Mouse. The character Count Duckula was chosen for this spin-off. The Count’s cartoon lasted 4 seasons and 65 episodes.
There was even a spin-off from Count Duckula – Victor & Hugo: Bunglers in Crime. I’m amazed that I’ve never heard of Victor & Hugo because it lasted 30 episodes plus 6 novels and 2 audiobooks. I did a little research and it doesn’t appear that this cartoon ever aired on Nickelodeon and it wasn’t released on DVD. That’s probably why I’ve never even heard of it.
Count Duckula was popular enough in the United States that he had his own comic book published by Marvel Comics. It lasted 15 issues. He also appeared in a ton of British comics. The blog – Boy’s Adventure Comics – has a wonderful post about these comics with a ton of photos.
