The Pages of The Hobbit Come Alive With Smaug and Biblo on This Cake

Hobbit Cake

This Marvelous Smaug cake was made by Tartas Imposibles. It has Smaug, Bilbo, and The Hobbit book. This cake has The Hobbit book in an open position. The pages of the book are torn like Smaug has just popped out of the book. The Hobbit book cover has green grass, and black mountains with gray and white tops, and a white sky with birds and the outline of the moon.  It looks just like a copy of the book cover. There is a gold cloth bookmark hanging over the spine of the book. Bilbo is hiding behind the book to get away from Smaug.

Smaug’s head and neck are showing. There are gold coins on Smaug and scattered around on the cake board near the dragon. The cake board is a gray stone pattern.

This Hobbit cake was made using sponge cake, fudge, and modeling chocolate. Smaug’s neck and head were made using Rice Krispies Treats covered in modeling chocolate.  Modeling chocolate made it possible to create a Smaug with complex blending of many of different colors within a narrow color band.  Bilbo was made using modeling chocolate.

These Cakes Are Precious To Gollum

Hobbit Cake

This Fabulous Three Dimensional Gollum Cake was made by Karin Klenner of Sweet Little Treat for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration.

Karin began making cakes about three and one half years ago as a hobby and loves it as a way to express her creativity. For this collaboration, she wanted to create a cake that was a realistic replica, instead of something that just resembled Gollum.  She said that the hardest part was getting all the little details correct. The basis for her design was a Weta Workshop bust of Gollum.  She did a great job making her edible Gollum look realistic.

This Lord of the Rings Cake is approximately 30 centimeters high and took 1.5 kilograms of fondant and 1 kilogram of modeling chocolate to make.  Gollum’s single strands of hair were made out of sugar. Gollum took about thirty hours to complete. The core of Gollum is fondant. The outer layers are modeling chocolate.  The eyes were painted with petal dust. The name plaque was made using fondant and rice paper and painted using edible gold and black paints.

This Magnificent 3D Gollum Cake was made by Elina Prawito of Bake-a-boo Cakes for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration.  Gollum is over 45 centimeters tall. This Lord of the Rings cake is a cute standing version of Gollum eating a cupcake with pink icing, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. The baker wanted to show Gollum finding a new precious in the form of a yummy cupcake.

Gorgeous Arwen and Galadriel Cakes

Arwen Cake

This stunning Arwen Cake was made by Raewyn Read from Cakes by Raewyn.  Raewyn made Arwen for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration.

Arwen Cake

Raewyn chose Arwen because she has always been mesmerized by Arwen’s grace and ethereal beauty equally as much as her strength and resilience.

Arwen Cake

Arwen is made of a 50/50 mix of gumpaste and modeling chocolate.  She is completely hand painted.  Her Butterfly Crown is made of gumpaste and florists wire with royal icing piping.

Arwen Cake

One thing I love about this cake is how lifelike Arwen looks.  Her eye brows, eyes, nose, and lips are terrific.

Arwen Cake

Last month, I made a mask for a masquerade ball.  It was a lot harder than it looked.  So, I really appreciate Arwen’s gorgeous Butterfly Crown.  It is hard to believe that it was made from wire, royal icing, and gumpaste.

Galadriel Cake

This amazing Galadriel Cake was made by Becs Lake from Stiletto Studio Cakes.  Becs’ cake was inspired by the following Hobbit poster:

Galadriel Poster

Becs did a wonderful job recreating this in cake.

Galadriel Cake

Galadriel’s torso is cake. Her arms, neck, and head are modelled and layered fondant which was hand painted with vodka, water, and powder colours.  Her eyes were painted with airbrush colours.  The bottle is made from lights wrapped in edible wafer paper and flower wires.

Galadriel Cake

This is the Brooch of Galadriel.  The detail on it terrific.

Galadriel Cake

I love Becs version of the Phial of Galadriel.  The handle is terrific and I really like how it glows from within.

According to Wikipedia, the Phial of Galadriel was a parting gift to Frodo Baggins by Galadriel when the Fellowship of the Ring left Lórien.  It was also known as the Star-glass, because it held a little fragment from the light of the Star of Eärendil, which was one of the Silmarils, contained within the waters of Galadriel’s Mirror. It is thus a reflection of a reflection of the light of the Two Trees of Valinor.

Watch Out! Saruman and Sauron Are Here

Saruman Cake

This Magnificent Saruman Cake was made by Sondra Vicelich of Sweet Bites Cakes for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration.  She really liked the deep voice of this Lord of the Rings character and decided to take on the challenge of making an edible three dimensional sculpture of him. She did a great job crafting the details of this sculpture: his facial features and his beard and hair. Saruman the White has his hand resting on a crystal ball that shows the Eye of Sauron. Fondant, royal icing, and wafer paper were used to make this Awesome edible artwork. The hair and beard were individual strands of royal icing piped onto the cake.

Sauron Cake

This Terrific Lord of the Rings Cake was made by Kim Donker of Caketin Love for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration. This Wonderful cake features four different hand-painted paintings based on the Lord of the Rings movies and a hand-crafted three dimensional mace of Sauron. The first painting is of three Ringwraiths aka Nazguls with swords in their hands. The second one is of the One Ring with its Elvish Rune inscription. The third one shows Gollum hiding behind some rocks, and the fourth is of the Eye of Sauron. Sauron’s Mace is on top of the cake with its handle sticking in a mound of boulders.  The mace was made using a wooden dowel with gum paste blades. On the cake board is a hand-painted map of Middle Earth.
